Service Description
This course is suitable for any counsellor or psychotherapist about to begin, or already working with domestic abuse clients. Our comprehensive training programme is designed to cover the knowledge and skills required to start work with domestic abuse clients, using theory, skills practice, role play, self-reflection and case studies. It will run for 4 days over 2 weeks, on the 20th, 23rd, 27th and 30th of October, with a cohort of up to 12 (minimum of 4) trainees. Please ensure you can make each of the training days as non-attendance will affect your learning, and the learning of the group. Over the four days, we will help you to understand the experience and needs of the client and their particular sensitivities. You will learn about the theory and how to apply that theory in session. Many of our attendees have noted that the training also enhances their work with other client groups. During the Foundation Training Programme you will learn: 1. What domestic abuse is and its prevalence 2. How to use the DAC model 3. Why clients can experience significant mental health difficulties after domestic abuse 4. What effect domestic abuse can have on other relationships 5. What clients need initially in therapy 6. The skills and knowledge required to help the client to settle down to process their experiences 7. How to repair relational ruptures that may occur in within counselling 8. How to pick up on unconscious processes and work with them during therapy 9. How people protect themselves during abuse, why this can be unhelpful if continued post-abuse, and how to help 10. Ways to challenge clients in a constructive, positive and helpful way 11. What complex trauma is and how it can be worked with during counselling, safely and creatively 12. How domestic abuse affects different people in different ways and what that means for our responses to them 13. The impact of childhood domestic abuse on adult clients and the therapeutic relationship 14. Confidentiality, boundaries and disclosure in complex situations 15. Notes and court processes 16. The importance of counsellor self-care and yo 17. Whether domestic abuse counselling is for you The course will be delivered mainly by Dr Jeannette Roddy, accredited member of BACP, practicing counsellor and supervisor, and editor of "Working with client experiences of domestic abuse". The price for the course is £500. Early bird pricing of £350 is available until 21st September 2025.

Cancellation Policy
Training sessions can be booked up to 1-day in advance, where places are still available. Where places are already taken, we can offer a waitlist option, where people are taken strictly in order of placement on the waitlist should places become available. If there are insufficient numbers for the course to go ahead 28 days before it is due to start, we reserve the right to cancel the course. In this instance, we will give you a choice of receiving a full refund at that time or moving the booking to the next available course. Payment is due at the time of booking and is non-refundable within 28 days of the start of the course. This is to ensure that the course can run for the remaining participants. The course is run online using Zoom. Delegates are responsible for ensuring that they have the necessary software and an appropriate internet connection to be able to utilise the training. Delegates will also need an email address for receipt of training materials.
