Domestic Abuse Counselling Training

Service Description

This course is suitable for any mental health professional about to begin, or recently started, therapeutic work with domestic abuse clients in an agency or privately. Our comprehensive training programme is designed to cover the knowledge and skills required to start work with domestic abuse clients, using theory, practice and experiential work including role play, skills practice and case studies. It will run for 4 days over 2 weeks, on the 7th, 10th, 14th and 17th of October, with a cohort of up to 12 (minimum of 4) trainees. Please ensure you can make each of the training days as non-attendance will affect your learning, and the learning of the group. Over the four days, we will help you to understand the experience and needs of the client and their particular sensitivities. You will not only learn about the theory, but also how to apply the theory in-session. Many of our trainees have noted that the training not only supports domestic abuse work, but also enhances their work with other client groups as well. During the Foundation Training Programme you will learn: 1. What domestic abuse is and its prevalence 2. How to use the DAC model 3. Why clients can experience significant mental health difficulties after domestic abuse 4. What effect domestic abuse can have on other relationships 5. What clients need initially in therapy 6. The skills and knowledge required to help the client to settle down to process their experiences 7. How to repair relational ruptures that may occur in within counselling 8. How to pick up on unconscious processes and work with them during therapy 9. How people protect themselves during abuse, why this can be unhelpful if continued post-abuse, and how to help 10. Ways to challenge clients in a constructive, positive and helpful way 11. What complex trauma is and how it can be worked with during counselling, safely and creatively 12. How domestic abuse affects different people in different ways and what that means for us in our responses to them 13. Confidentiality, boundaries and disclosure in complex situations 14. Notes and court processes 15. The importance of counsellor self-care 16.
